Grange L'Archer, 23240, Le Grand-Bourg, Limousin

Grange l'archer is located on the north-western border of the Massif Central in Creuse part of the department of Limousin, and is one of France's best kept secrets. With a landscape full of undulating hills, streams, rivers, lakes and forest the Creuse remains virtually untouched by industry or urbanisation making it the perfect place to relax. This tranquil region of France is known for its outstanding beauty and picturesque landscapes, plateaus, forests, rivers and lakes, many of which offer beaches and water sports.

Winters here can be cold but in summer the weather is pleasantly sunny and warm, an ideal holiday destination for those who enjoy pre-mechanised rural France but prefer to avoid the intense heat found in the more popular south.

This area of France is served from many of the UK's regional airports by the low cost airlines flying into Limoges airport, from where it is a 50 minute drive to the barn. It is also easy to drive to, via France's superb road network, the A20 being only 25 minutes away, making the channel ports reachable in 7 hours and Zeebrugge in around 8 hours for those wanting to catch a ferry from Hull.

If you prefer you may want to take the train, La Souterraine station with a direct line to Paris is 17 km away from where you can hire a car. The TGV also stops in La Souterraine on its direct run from Lille.

Directions

BY CAR: The A20 motorway runs south from Orleans towards Toulouse.

Take Exit 23 to get on to the N145/E62 heading east towards Guéret and Montluçon.

After about 17km (10.5 miles), you will come to an exit that is signposted D49 exit toward Lizières/Noth

Take this and at the bottom of the slip road turn right onto the D49 and then right again to remain on the D49 then the first left to head towards Le Grand Bourg.

Once you have reached Le Grand Bourg (after about 9km (5.6 miles)), turn right at the Rue du Stade Gabriel Adenis onto the D4 signposted Limousin A20 opposite the Café du Stade for 77m. After the first 90 degree left hand bend bear left (it looks like a little side street) onto the Rue de Ruffiers/D48 signposted ‘Jansannes’ and follow this road for about 3km (1.8 miles). The first part of the road is moderately narrow and is a patchwork of tarmac!

You will pass a road left, a road right another road left before coming to a moderate left handed bend, just round this is the hard turn right (almost a hairpin bend) and the road to the hamlet of Besse. This road the V7, signed both Besse and it is also part of the Circuit de Gartempe. Follow this road for 450 m and take the left fork almost immediately after the first house you come to into the hamlet. Continue into the hamlet bearing left at a big barn past some rabbit cages and the barn will be on your right as per the photograph. (You will arrive from the right hand side of this photograph).

You can either park on the gravelled area, or in the entrance to the garden at the right hand end of this picture in front of the gates to the garden. Besse is on a no through road, but be aware farm vehicles may also need to use the road.

If you have sat nav, put in Besse 23240 Le Grand Bourg and you should arrive straight at the hamlet.

BY AIR: Our closest airport is Limoges, which is served by Ryanair from Stansted, Leeds, Liverpool and East Midlands and by Flybe from Southampton and Newcastle.  From the airport, follow the signs to A20 motorway direction Chateauroux or Orleans. Then see above for directions. There is a cut through before Exit 23 but that route is easiest for when you first arrive.

BY RAIL: if you live in the south-east of England or want to travel in a more environmentally friendly way, the train is a good way to get here. The Eurostar will take you to Paris Gare du Nord.

Transfer to Gare D'Austerlitz by metro and from there get a train to La Souterraine. Note that there is almost no public transport within Creuse, so you will need a car once you get here. These can be hired in La Souterraine - please let us know if you need help with this.
